Female Founder Spotlight: Amy Rothstein

This post is part of our Women's History Month series, where we introduce inspiring female founders making waves.

What does it take to succeed in an industry that’s dominated by large corporations and mass production? For Amy Rothstein, the founder of Dona Chai, a small batch producer of masala chai and turmeric concentrate, a void in the market and a growing wellness trend provided her with a space to do exactly that.

Early on in life, Amy had a passion for food. As soon as she graduated from the University of Michigan, she moved to Colorado to work on a non-profit farm where she trained children how to grow and prepare their own food. A year later, Amy decided to deepen her knowledge of food and moved to New York to pursue a graduate degree in food studies at NYU.

As a graduate student, Amy spent quite a bit of time relaxing and studying in local coffee shops. But she didn’t drink coffee. And this led her toward an important discovery—there weren’t many high-quality chai options, especially if you wanted those options to be locally sourced and made with real spices.

Amy’s love of food fueled her determination to fill this gap. Having never made chai before, she recruited her mother and her mother’s friend, a chef from India, and took on the monumental task of mixing innumerable spices in infinite combinations until she found just the right delicious, flavorful combinations. From those obsessive days in the kitchen crafting the best possible blend of flavors, Dona Chai was born.

How she named her company: Dona was the name of a creepy childhood doll owned by her Mom and is the first name that came to mind.

What we love: The gorgeous minimalist packaging for starters. But, the best part? A delicious, complex chai that you can make at home in mere minutes!

Products we carry in our curated gift box collection:

Dona Chai Turmeric Concentrate, a blend of freshly ground turmeric, pink peppercorn, ginger, allspice, lemongrass, and black pepper.
